I recently read an article that stated that bi and gay women are more suseptable to breast cancer due to the fact that they do not get the proper phyicals that they need. I was wondering an one else has heard of anything similar. I personal find this rediculus(spelling is not my thing sorry) I see women talking better care of themselves more than ever. I was just wondering if they are just trying to spook us or what that is all. .

hmmmm... sounds somewhat suspicious. I've heard similar claims based on race, religion, social class, etc. But never in conjunction with sexual orientation

I've never heard such a thing. As bi_memphis said..I've heard that certain races may be at higher risk but not due to sexual orientation. I don't see how it would matter. All women need to be checked and every single one of us runs the risk. Just as men and prostate cancer....are they at higher risk if they are gay/bisexual???

Other than SOME gay or bisexual may get less medical care than SOME str8 women, I can see no reason why thay should be true any more that the correlary statement that gay or bisexual men are more susceptible to testicular cancer. It wound like hype form the rabid relgious wrong to me. Years ago there was a similar hoohaw about women whose male partner was circumcized were less susceptible to cervical cancer because of a supposed lower incidence in women kibbutzim.

Does this come out of the same research that states West african negroes have the biggest dicks and clitorises? that Han Chinese have better brains for maths? that ----- oh forget it.

You know the sort of garbage I'm talking about.

Racist, homophobic crap!!!

Just take regular medical checks like everyone and forget the "research!!!"

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Cancer doesn't play favorites.

Allow me to join the chorus of people dismissing the lesbian breast cancer claims.... sounds like something based on specious evidence.

Die from it perhaps - god forbid - due to the lack of early detection.

God I am glad I am not the only one who thinks that this is a load of crap. I just hope there are people out there that know better. It just scares me that someone even made the suggestion that there might be a connection. Thank you all I really appreciate your responding to this for me.

There is in fact some basis for this. It does not relate to sexuality per se, but pregnancy. There have been large, well respected studies done on this.

Being pregnant decreases a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer by a small amount. Thus nuns, lesbians and any other ladies that are never pregnant do have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. It is believed this is due to the hormonal changes of pregnacy and breastfeeding.

However - these same women have a lower risk of some other cancers, particularly cervical cancer. These ladies have a much lower rate of HPV (cervical warts) and HPV is strongly associated with cervical cancer. Women generally get HPV from their male partners...

The OVERALL risk of cancer is really the same, there is just a slightly different pattern. This is the bit that that tends to be left out...

Funnily enough the bit that does relate directly to sex is in the lesbian's favour!

i agree with you arana...
that is the dumbest thing i have heard, cancer is more likely to be passed down in the family genes...i know because both cancer and heart problems are in my family and i lost both parents to cancer...
Theresa,i honestly feel that someone was trying to spook you hon...

THAT ARTICLE IS BULLSHIT! Cancer doesn't just sit around on it's couch saying "Oh, I wonder what group I should target next. Oh, I know! How about bisexuals?" GTF out of here. Some asshole is just out to scare people.

Well 2curioustwo might well be correct

The rates in different groups of folks might be different.

But the orginal post said something like "because they dont get medical .."

Base rate and detection are sort of confused here - perhaps in a bit of a technical argument.

I hope in the western world a person demands the best possible care for their bodies - irrespective of who they love

cheers

That is true, it did say because they don't have regular medical care....BUT that is true of any disease. So this article should have been written differently.

that is nothing but a joke cause cancer could hit anyone at anytime and doesn't single out a certain group so that article is BS.

Thank you everyone I was just wondering if I was just handed a bunch of crap which I was obviousely was. I think that I worry for the people out there who really don't know what is truth and what is fiction. It seems to me that people are always looking to blame others for what they don't understand regardless if it is true or not. Thanks again you sweet people thank you :) .
