wow something just got tweaked....I'm down from 3.5 minutes to load to something less than 7 seconds to change pages !
odd though: get a "page cannot be displayed" on Chrome, but it loaded fine on Firefox.

I'm not so sure. Took me ages to reload the main page. Then it took me 30 seconds to get to the reply page. Maybe it's just me, but it's still slow.

Actually---I found that when I was on this morning---it was very slow to navigate the internet at nearly any site--it took forever it seemed for Mozilla Firefox browser to load--silly me--I hit it like ten times and when the program finally responded--I had however many windows open to relate to how many times I had clicked on the Firefox icon on my desktop.
It seemed that every site I went to was slow--but in fact--this one was one of the faster sites to respond and navigate through.

May also like DOJ (javascript:void(location.href='http://doj.me/?url='+encodeURI(window.location.host));) which is a toolbar link, 'smart' bookmark for the Down Or Just Me (http://doj.me/) site.
Found these a while back during some gaming sessions. The game servers often go down for various reasons. *shrugs* Technology for you. Don't game so much now, lost interest in the games.
Drew, I did use ftp to see the site's operating system. ProFTPD said you're running Unix. I can tell you a user handle if you ask. All I did was look at your server's welcome mat. "Hi I'm Drew's server, running Unix and ProFTPD, got a password?"
I had no password. Only did an ls to see if it would list a directory. "Got a password?" So, I left.
At any given you can use netstat (http://tldp.org/LDP/nag2/x-087-2-iface.netstat.html) to get more accurate readings. Figure you probably already know that as well as a few other things. Your server has a few different ports open aside from ftp and http. Figure you've those secured as well.
Apologies for looking up your skirt so to speak. Darn wind caught it, human nature to look. And yes, look is all I did. Anything else and I would not be so public.

open ports u say? https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
click 'proceed' on page one, then run the 3 diagnostics on the subsequent page: file sharing, common ports and all service ports... hover over an open port and they'll tell you all about it... well, the first 1056 that is :)

Anyone know much about Mozilla Firefox?? for years I had used IE and about a year or so back went with Mozilla and have never had any issues--but now since I loaded the latest edition--it takes nearly a minute for the browser to come up when I am starting up the computer-----does anyone else who uses the latest edition of Firefox have that issue???
I had tried using Safari for a time but was only so so satisfied---I do have Google Chrome loaded and it works good--but have not made it my default browser----any recommendations for going over to Chrome---it is the latest edition of that one too.

*chuckles* GRC always tells me I live in California. That's probably where the ISP's data hub resides. Computer here is running stealth. I've got it pretty well hardened, and the network presently is based on a CentOS server which is locked down even more paranoid than this computer.
Love my Root Kit hunter and Gnu Sudo, Account. Debian also uses FAM ( file alteration monitor) by default, have it disabled currently. FAM can slow things down, Account does much the same as FAM with less overhead. Of course, a person can look at atimes on files too but touch can fool you. *sighs feeling rather void*

Not sure about making it load up quicker. I use Firefox, version 7.01 currently. I also use a hosts (http://hostsfile.mine.nu/) file to block nearly all online adverts. Further, use some extensions:
AdBlock (http://tinyurl.com/3qtgneg) Plus - Block adds based on filter subscriptions.
Element (http://tinyurl.com/3nt8f6b) Hiding for Adblock Plus - hide noisy flashing gifs, flash.
Browser (http://tinyurl.com/3dgqcru) Protect - Don't let someone hijack your homepage.
Click&Clean (http://tinyurl.com/3torlmy)- clear your cache, history, cookies in one click.
Ghostery (http://tinyurl.com/3torlmy) - block trackers like Google analytics, RealAds, SpamTrack etc.
ODP (http://tinyurl.com/3ugn9lp) Bookmarks - Use Open directory categories for your bookmarks.
OverbiteFF (http://tinyurl.com/42erlvs) - Gopher is still pretty cool.
TinyUrl (http://tinyurl.com/5rz67ow) Generator - make short links easier.
Trashmail (http://tinyurl.com/3bf9jfn).net - Use throw away email addresses.
DownThemAll (http://tinyurl.com/3h38zdp)- handy download manager.
Unplug (http://tinyurl.com/6f4r9jf) - Media downloader.
Downloadhelper (http://tinyurl.com/3cq2qa8) - good for youtube.
I use a couple others as well. These ought to get a person started in having a fairly safe, ad free surfing with Firefox time. A good guide (http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_1.html) to making Firefox quick. I like FireFox because it is stable, secure and continues the tradition of Mosaic.

Thanks Peg--I am thinking about it---I just hate to have to go and get all the passwords reset in the various places I regularly visit on the web loaded in the sign in boxes for them--many I forget what the passwords are.
I am glad that someone brought this thread up---I was thinking of doing that and posting---it is very slow today---taking all kinds of time just to load each page--its been that way for me the past few days. Don't know if it was me or not.
Kinda glad to see that someone else is having the same problem.

I don't know if its related or not--but in the past few days when I have gone to the store and made any purchases on a debit or credit card---things are moving very slowly and the clerks always make mention of it----I guess it could be both the internet and other information networks are seeing more traffic with the coming of the holidays----just throwing out the possibility of this being the case

Nov. 16, The site timed out three or four times this morning. Other sites were fine. I checked cookies because until they are set the site won't load. No cookies were present. I finally kept an eye on the status bar and the transfers were stopping before the cookie was set. Last try ten cookies loaded and the log in screen was available. After going through the user name and password routine it took longer to arrive at the home page. Other sites were responding normally so I assumed it was this site having issues.

For those of you who can view this, and are able to reach those who can't, or those of you who can only view the site from a certain ISP or proxy, can you do me a favour... can you run a traceroute to the site (when logged on the ISP that can't access the site)?
This is how you do that:
1. go here: http://www.dnsstuff.com/ (or google "traceroute" to find alternative sites)
2. Enter "bisexual.com" into the box that says "Traceroute" and hit enter.
3. Then cut and paste the report it gives ("the traceroute") to here or to drew22@bisexual.com
Thanks for the help.

That site I referenced for a traceroute might not be doing the trick... for any of you on Windows, here is a better way (but a bit more complicated).
1. Open the command prompt:
a) Windows 7 or Vista: From the Start menu, in the search field, type cmd , and then press Enter.
b) Previous versions of Windows: From the Start menu, select Run... . In the "Open:" box, type cmd , and then press Enter.
2. At the command prompt, enter: tracert bisexual.com And send me the report to drew22@bisexual.com or post it here.
This would be from a connection/computer that cannot currently visit the site.
Thanks for the help.

Fran, that won't work for this issue. It's the only site that won't load without a proxy, the tracert shows there is a connection that is timing out badly somewhere along the line. It's not the site, it's not my computer or the cable company but somewhere in between in cyberspace. I've flushed my DNS, I've rebooted, I've shut down, I've reset modem, I've done everything there is to do and it still is an issue. It may correct itself eventually but for now it just isn't working.

As for the slowness of the site... That is another problem. I recognize that the site has been slow the last month or two or more. We are going to get the new site up and going and then going to take a closer look at that. It may be time for a new server. So the periodic slowness will continue at least until we switch to the new site.
Thanks again to everyone who helped us troubleshoot this! I am always touched by how amazing our members can be - no longer surprised but always touched and in awe of the support.

dunno about anyone else, but I'd settle for slow over GONE, any day. The chatroom I used to frequent before I came here, just disappeared without warning (just like last Sunday) never to be seen since....lost a lot of friends when that happened. Now I keep email addys.

There appears to be a firewall at 174.133.202.225 (hop 1) that blocks unwanted TCP packets.
Legend:
ECN was not used on the TCP packets. To use ECN, click here.
T1/T2/T3 are the round-trip times in milliseconds (1/1000ths of a second).
T1 uses a proper ICMP-based tracert (Microsoft style). T2 uses a UDP-based traceroute (Unix-style). T3 uses a TCP-based traceroute (port 80).
Since many ISPs now block ICMP and/or packets to unknown ports, T3 (rarely used by traceroute programs) typically shows the best results.
Best times may be theoretical (if it takes 80ms to hop 10, and 50ms to hop 11, we say the best time for hop 10 is 50ms).
If no reverse DNS entry is given for an IP, we display 'unknown.example.com' if the domain name is known.

I was trying to diagnose with void yesterday and doing a traceroute I saw that there seemed to be a bit of a lag in the hops when it left Verizon's border router. Sometimes it would go from Verizon through xo.net and on to pnap.net and sometimes it would go straight from Verizon to pnap.net...hops were taking between 36 and 40ms.. one time it looked like it went from pnap.net to xo.net and back again..kinda weird routing..
I just ran again and it hopped thusly:

traceroute is supposed to show EVERY hop right?..so is the difference some sort of fallover or load balancing?
..but searches such as "find all posts by X" also take longer (or is that just longer to get the response from HTTP?) - lots of new people signing up? I would hate to think someone is DoS'ing the site..although I'm sure it gets plenty of probes being that it is published on search indexes.

I've never seen that many stars on a traceroute before - I'm not sure what it means.
The "adjustments" that the server guy did, and which i mentioned before, was to tweak the threshold/algorythm at which a connection is viewed as an "attack". It seems to have solved the problem for now. Something is different out there with some of the big ISPs lately.

Well I was curious about that too, according to the man page every five seconds it waits and doesn't hear a response it prints one of those lines with the stars..so you could maybe say it is cheap visual representation of how long it took for the diagnostic response to bounce back from each router?
I would pay more attention to the "ping" times in ms - the one of 147ms is kinda long..but that only happened once.
For some reason it seems to like to go through VA/GA, probably because big Verizon (my ISP) hub there - ends up in Missouri..either direct to cyberwurx or through xo.net and then cyberwurx..
Based on what I am seeing and what gets returned through whois I'm not sure there is a problem..other than a little bit of lag..unless it is on the host end which seems to be what your server guy confirms.
Some TCP/IP implementations have built in support against DoS attack that will actively close ports and deny service instead of leaving infinite number of TCP ports open and exhausting all resources enough to crash the server. Some networks have a separate physical hardware IDS performing the same type of network policing function.
It could also be that your timeouts just needed a bit of a tweak to make more efficient.
Here in the US there are big debate over "net neutrality" - whether or not a site can pay more money to ISP to get "preferred" throughput on the network while other traffic is throttled back. Of course, they are probably ALREADY doing this with QoS, deep packet inspection and data caps on "unlimited" plans but this legislation would make it Federally permissible for them to create a tiered network for "preferred" content.
I've never seen that many stars on a traceroute before - I'm not sure what it means.
The "adjustments" that the server guy did, and which i mentioned before, was to tweak the threshold/algorythm at which a connection is viewed as an "attack". It seems to have solved the problem for now. Something is different out there with some of the big ISPs lately.

hmmm...
I had one.....well take a look:
11 160 ms 202 ms 208 ms cyberwurx-3.border2.acs002.pnap.net [64.94.3.122]
just ran it again and it was down to 66 ms (3 days later)
mine goes from Ottawa>Toronto>GreenwoodVillage CO>CO>CO>CO>(4 hops) then on to Seattle and that's where it bogs down to 202-208 ms. I end up in St. Louis MO (I wish :tong: )
oddly, my count is 14 hops but the report said 30 ? what's up with that?
I'm with bell.ca and I'm throttled every afternoon GRRR (just about the time the kiddies get out of school)

I think the site should be faster now! We discovered a problem that has been around since about the end of September and fixed it today. It seems faster to me!
