I remember back in the 80s, 90s... commericals were not that long... and most were exciting.
These days it seems commericals keep going on and on and on and you're wondering if the show you were watching is ever gonna come back on lol
TLC channel for example drags thier commericals and previews for other TLC shows.
Sometimes I feel Im watching more commerical than the TV show (or TV movie) thats on.
Makes me just wanna shut off the TV and do something else OR pop in a commerical free movie or tv series. (season dvds of tv shows)
A lot of commericals these days are usless and not as exciting. even tho they are great excuse to get a snack or go potty. lol
I think TV shows aren't worth watching anymore especially when you feel like your just watching commericals..... and with shows coming on DVDs now in seasons... I'll much rather wait for the DVD.
What are your thoughts on TV??

The only things I use a TV for are watching porn and movies I've rented or own.

I don't know... While the 80s comercials are like cherished childhood TV memories for me, not all of today's commercials are that bad. Get to learn of cool bands through some of them!
The only ones that annoy me are the ones that make guys look really stupid and helpless. No moral troubles or anything, it's just a theme that's getting lame.

I'm with you Solomon! TV sucks your brain right out of your head!
While sometimes I don't fit into casual conversation because I don't know the plot of last night's sitcom, I find it much easier to think for myself now lol.

A-fucking-men.
That's always been something me and my dad have talked about and noticed. Sometimes I think guys should rise up and say something, just like women did. It wasn't right then, ain't right now.

Commercials?
I think the only time I've even glanced at a TV in the past four months was when I was watching the weather channel in the art department to see whether or not we were going to have to dive into the basement because of a tornado. Otherwise, I have no purpose and no time for it.
I do own some DVDs (documentaries), but I watch them on my playstation, and even that has its own portable screen. Its tiny, but it works.
I also happen to live with people who watch a lot of TV, though. For me, it's almost entirely useless:The big black box that shows you things.
If it's showing a documentary on something I haven't seen before (maybe only 10% of the time) or Mythbusters (maybe only 5-10% of the time) and I actually have free time (almost 0-1% of the time),THEN I'll watch it.
...which means again, it's almsot dead to me.

Actually, there are some pretty clever commercials today but they are few and far between (and their effect is gone quickly) and although childhood memories sometimes seem wonderful, I don't remember ANY good commercials from the 70's, 80's, or 90's (maybe the one where the little old lady asks: "Where's the beef"!! LOL).
The main problem is what you pointed out. There are more and more channels with more and more commercial time and so it seems like there are nothing but commercials on. In addition, a usual "30 minute" television show can be made up of less than 15 minutes of actual show time (witness the DVD's that come out now with entire seasons of shows in as little as 4 hrs!!)
I do have some DVD's of old cartoon shows that my kids watch and they are actually longer!! Maybe there are more commercials/show these days...
The best solution..
I rarely watch TV... NOT worth it - - not even the "popular" shows like 24, Gray's Anatomy, etc.
my 2cents: No TV is good TV

EXCATLY!!! the 30 min shows are more like 15 mins!! The other 15 is in commericals! I remember as a kid (80s and 90s) you saw a lot more of a 30 min show.
Im watching TV less and less.... Im considering just ditching it lol
I have DVDs but my computer can play DVDs so why do I need a TV set? :)

TASHA, A- men! I used to like to watch TV back in the 70's. ..but now the commercials are 50%..if not more,of the show. Sure, the sponsors are paying to have their products in the commericals, and some are important,but.. enuf is enuf

i think tv definately lost it's attraction to me when i heard Jewel's song 'Who Will Save Your Soul' and the lyrics pointed out that i was watching people believing that they lived a better life than me....
talk about being smacked upside the head with a reality brick lol!
i don't have anything against watching tv... but at least i am aware that i don't hafta agree that their life is any better or worse than mine

We have had TiVo in our house for 4 years and it has changed the way we watch TV. We "bloop-bloop" through commercials (the sound TiVo makes when you fast forward) and we only watch what we want to *when* we want to. Most of the time it's just on for background noise except for a few shows like Heroes, House, Mythbusters and My Name Is Earl.

I do not have any problem with commercials.
I watch a few select offerings of Public TV, C-SPAN, History Channel and CNN NEWS. I change channels as soon as any commercial interrupts the program. My approximate viewing time per day is 20 to 30 minutes. I always have better things to do than watch TV.
I would much rather have sex than watch a commercial.
I would even rather have sex than watch TV (it is really true).
Especially Saturday night, TV is not part of the action.

I watch a lot of TV, happily. There are many interesting ,non commercial, programs on these days and I usually use the skip forward on my DVR for the commercials.

For a while I had cable TV, I never watched it - only a handful of shows and most of them not made within the last decade. "Reality TV" happened during the writer's strike, when producers figured out they could hire regular people off the street and produce a show for much less, then market the crap out of it to convince people they want to watch it. My opinion is if you want to see "reality" then open the door and look outside.
I record over the air digital broadcasts using MythTV and have a netflix subscription - that's more than enough content actually.
American commercials have never really been funny, there's something "off" about them, and now that there are more of them then ever, and they are compressing the shows to fit even more ad time - it's just disgusting. I can't watch regular TV without mocknig the ads, it gets on the nerves of my friends.
You won't see this on ABC, NBC, CBS..

..the closest is a viagra commercial on the evening news..(which for some reason feels that they need to compete with the tabloid shows now)..

Commercials are designed to emotionally manipulate you into feeling you need to buy a product or service and THAT, coupled with teevee on the whole being a form of subtle brainwashing, is why I choose Netflix. : )
Research Edward Bernais. You may not have heard of him but he certainly has had his effect on all of us. He was probably the most influential person of the past century.

I go to great lengths to avoid commercials. While I do have a Hulu+ membership, the only person who watches it is my wife.
I don't like being advertised to in general. It's like this constant insidious needling at you, trying to get you to want something you really don't need. Hell, if I DO see an advertised product, it usually makes me not want to purchase it. Sort of like, if the thing was that good, you wouldn't need to 'sell' it to me.

I think that I hear less complaints about TV commercials etc. Over the past eight years a huge change is happening with people's viewing habits. Most younger people are ignoring the more traditional TV with commercials and instead are using the internet as their main source of entertainment. Add such sites as net flex and I have to wonder if traditional TV with commercials will exist?

As more of us use DVRs or TiVo to watch tv, advertising revenue drops requiring the station to add more commercials adding to the problem. TV is going the route of the music industry. The days of actors being paid Sheen levels are about to be history. With Netflix, Hulu, HBO and the slew of pay channels, one never needs to watch a commercial. Although I must say my mother in law watches a ton of tv and I guess if you have a transvaginal mesh, it might be a good thing to see that lawyer commercial. gawd
