Wondering of some songs that have subject matter dealing with bisexuality? Anyone know any?

This came to me as I was listening to The White Stripes cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene". Hearing Jack White sing "I'm begging of you please don't take my man" sounds very bi.

So, are there "bi songs" out there?

REM's pretty persuasion but that's not surprising since Stipe is bi/queer.

Also there's Ani DiFranco's song In or Out which is about it but I don't always like sexual politics or songs about them like that.

He asked so I told. Anyway it's a well known fact.

Stipe is out, here's an interview that I like.

Franz Ferdinand's "Michael" happens to be a personal favorite of mine...

This is where I'll be so heavenly,
so come and dance with me Michael
So sexy, I'm sexy,
so come and dance with me Michael
I'm all that you see, you wanna see,
so come and dance with me Michael
So close now, so close now,
so come and dance with me, so come and dance with me, so come and dance
with me

Michael,
you're the boy with all the leather hips,
sticky hair, sticky hips,
stubble on my sticky lips

Michael,
you're the only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
Beautiful boys on a beautiful dancefloor

Michael,
you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore
Michael,
waiting on a silver platter now ... and nothing matters now

This is what I am, I am a man
so come and dance with me Michael
So strong now, its strong now
so come and dance with me Michael
I'm all that you see, you wanna see
so come and dance with me Michael
So close now, its close now,
so come and dance with me, so come and dance with me, SO COME AND DANCE WITH ME

Michael,
you're the boy with all the leather hips,
sticky hair, sticky hips, stubble on my sticky hips

Michael,
you're the only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
Beautiful boys on a beautiful dancefloor

Michael,
you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore
Michael,
waiting on a silver platter now ... and nothing matters now

Michael,
you're the only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
only one I'd ever want
(twice)

Beautiful boys on a beautiful dancefloor
Michael,
you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore
Michael, waiting on a silver platter now, nothing matters now, nothing
Matters now but you

YEAH

I mean that I'm post labels, in that I don't really use sexual orientation labels for myself mainly since I don't always fit into them neatly.

I also don't always like the politics behind labels or how because you define yourself with one or two of them at the same time, or how people put their orientation as their whole worldview, how giving yourself a label puts you into a box that others will have preconcieved notions about you where every sexual act is seen as a denial or affirmation of identity.

I could care less what a celebrity's orientation is but Stipe is out and has mentioned how in that song he'll mention both genders.

OK, well when I first did come out as a teenager I did keep track of who was bi but it's easy to tell on the internet.

So when is it appropriate to be label conscious and when is it not?

People love to put other people into categories. I'm also very good at doing research, and anyone can use google/yahoo nowadays.

Everyone's different. If labels work for you and you love using them, by all means use them.

Yeah that was a great answer, honestly. How you knew that the song was about the singers sexuality is beyond me. I mean, I've heard the song, I know who REM is and that stipe is their singer. I'm just saying that you seemed to put it all together so seemlessly and even better, you were able to find citations to stipes alleged sexuality. great work.

I have the interview bookmarked because it's a good interview, and I read the interviews in Butt magazine on their site.

I also don't like to write about my personal life at all on here; but I'm very good at doing research because I do this for a living.

He's right. I asked, he told. I don't think he's labelling. Just referencing what someone else labels himself.
Thanks Diamonddog for the song names, and also thanks Taylormade for the Michael lyrics.

I also was thinking of the song "Andy, you're a star" by the Killers. Could be just 'gay' but it's got a bi feel to it, I think..

Not sure if this one qualifies but when it first came out it seemed to lean in that direction.

ALL THE GIRLS LOVE ALICE by Elton John

Raised to be a lady by the golden rule
Alice was the spawn of a public school
With a double barrel name in the back of her brain
And a simple case of Mummy-doesn't-love-me blues

Reality it seems was just a dream
She couldn't get it on with the boys on the scene
But what do you expect from a chick who's just sixteen
And hey, hey, hey, you know what I mean

All the young girls love Alice
Tender young Alice they say
Come over and see me
Come over and please me
Alice it's my turn today

All the young girls love Alice
Tender young Alice they say
If I give you my number
Will you promise to call me
Wait till my husband's away

Poor little darling with a chip out of her heart
It's like acting in a movie when you got the wrong part
Getting your kicks in another girl's bed
And it was only last Tuesday they found you in the subway dead

And who could you call your friends down in Soho
One or two middle-aged dykes in a Go-Go
And what do you expect from a sixteen year old yo-yo
And hey, hey, hey, oh don't you know

Ambi:)

Band: Living Colour - Song: Bi

People, if they choose you, then they want you to decide
But you’d rather relax, kick back, enjoy the ride
There’s a category if you’re straight or gay
You’re a wild card gambler and you like it both ways

Everybody wants you when you’re bi
Looking at the girls and eyeing all the guys
Everybody loves you when you’re bi
But the tension and the passion’s double amplified

My lover told me, well, that she’s bi
I wanted to scream, there were tears in my eyes
She said baby, baby, don’t you cry
‘Cause the one I am with, you’ve been seeing on the side

Everybody wants you when you’re bi
Eating with the girls and laughing with the guys
Everybody loves you when you’re bi
But the tension and the passion’s double amplified

Everybody wants you when you’re bi
Feeling all the girls and touching all the guys
Well, everybody loves you when you’re bi
Well a friend of a friend of a friend told me
Everybody’s messed up with their sexuality
Well a friend of a friend of a friend told me
I need a closet big enough to live in
A closet for the whole world to live in
I want a closet big enough to live in
A closet for the whole world to live in

Everybody wants you when you’re bi
Loving all the girls and loving all the guys
Everybody needs you when you’re bi
But the tension and the passion’s double amplified

Everybody wants you [that’s right]
Everybody needs you [um-hum]
Everybody likes you [I’ll bet]
Everybody loves you

Everybody, yeah
Everybody
Everybody, come on now
Everybody, [not me]
Everybody, whoo
Everybody, yeah
Everybody, come on now
Everybody

Well everybody loves you

Bi
Licking all the girls
Bi
Licking all the guys

Everybody’s fucked up with their sexuality
You like it both ways
Like it both ways
Bi

Taylormade, I just wanted to say thanks for bringing up the song "Michael" by Franz Ferdinand. It's one of my favorite songs right now. It's such a cool song both lyrically and musically. Anyways I wanted to add, I was looking up the origin of the song, like are the band members gay/bi or what exactly it came from. I heard it was just that the lead singer watched some guys dancing on each other at a club one night or something.. don't know how true. But the point I think is funny is the message board site I was reading about the song had all these guys who were all freaked out - their sexuality was being threatened and all. They were burning copies of the cd without "Michael" on it and all. And when listening to the song, they were pretending "Michael" is a female, a really hot female. I just thought it is so sad how some people are so close-minded or insecure in themselves that a damn song is going to "threaten their sexuality". Kind of makes me laugh. Makes me think they have their own homoerotical issues they need to deal with

Also- was it Skater Boy who brought up Everybody's Free (To wear Sunscreen). Thanks for bringing that up too. I love it. It's very liberating. :)

From what I've heard on television interviews with the band over here, the song is about a STRAIGHT guy who happened to be a friend of the band's, and got drunk and danced provocatively with another man at a niteclub. The song was just intended to take the piss out of him. However, some bands have been known to deliberately misrepresent (or be ambiguous about) the true meaning of their lyrics (Nirvana anyone?), so its likely that few people will ever have a TOTALLY definite answer. as for the lead singer being gay/bi, it ISN'T mentioned on his Wikipedia page, nor any of the internet lists of bisexual celebrities that I've come across so far. But, who really knows these days? Tbh it wouldn't be a major shock if he was though.

As for the "Sunscreen" song... some people may interpret a deeper meaning to some of its lyrics than others... I guess it all depends on your knowledge of... lol, never mind.

Hey, btw, was your user-name (Sometimes It Be That Way) inspired by the Jewel Kilcher song?

NB: LOL, I think its best to make this my final post on this topic... we're probably touching on things that weren't meant to be discussed openly. :tong:

anyways yes its from the jewel kilcher song. it's my answer to a lot of life's bullshit. if something goes wrong I am just like "oh well - sometimes it be that way"

"Oh damn - I am bisexual! oh well, sometimes it be that way"

Ah, yeah, but... media semiotics and sexuality... man, what can I say? Probably best not to open Pandora's Box... if only for my own sake...

Love the Jewel song, btw... she seems like a painfully honest and romantic person in a world full of deceitful sceptics. But I guess thats just my own take on her.

she is, thats why I love her. shes got a very positive nature to her. and I like that. I like to keep positive all the time, her music helps. she's had struggles in her life too, I also like when I can relate to people who overcome genuine struggles in their lives.

Tres interessant. when I first joined this site, I queried Prince's sexuality (for perhaps obvious reasons?) in one of the threads, but was re-assured that he was, apparently, hetero.

Still, he did write a song about "Purple Rain"

Armstrong from Green Day wrote a song about his bisexuality, and coming to terms with it at sixteen and seventeen:

Coming Clean

Seventeen and strung out on confusion.
Trapped inside a roll of disillusion.
I found out what it takes to be a man.
Mom and Dad will never understand...

Secrets collecting dust but never forget...
Skeletons come to life in my closet

I found out what it takes to be a man.
Mom and Dad will never understand...
What's happening to me!

Seventeen and coming clean for the first time.
I finally figured out myself for the first time.
I found out what it takes to be a man.
Mom and Dad will never understand...
What's happened to me!

Laugh all you want.

The labels are pretty much pointless and outdated political tools nowadays, that people love to break/bend, and if I'm in love and in a relationship with a man/men they don't mean shit to myself and the person/people who I love.

There's no way that 3-4 labels can fit all of humanity when it comes to human sexuality/gender.

Marc Bolan of T. Rex fame wrote a song in the late sixties called "Hippie Gumbo" which was supposedly about a relationship he had with a Frenchman.

Can't remember all the words:

"Met a man
he was nice
said his name was paradise

Hippie Gumbo
he's no good
Chop him up
For firewood..."

Must've been a rewarding relationship. :-)
