I guess I got suckered in on that one by our new president---one of the reasons I came to support him was his strong declaration that upon taking office--he'd have his new Attorney General sit down with him and they would immediately would gut all those excesses of the Bush administration----but that obviously did not take place----and it is troubling that Obama is following in Bush's footsteps in this regard--I do have to say to Jaime--he did post up that he didn't believe Obama on this--and Jaime---you can now tell me: "I told ya so!!!"
It does seem---power loves power and powers once attained--they don't go back into the genie bottle.
I guess the only consolation in this---the conservatives can run scared that a "liberal" president is going to make us of the expanded powers they obtained for the presidency--of course--they just don't paint Obama as a liberal--- they go a step beyond and call him a "socialist!"
Well--I say to the conservatives that so loved it that Bush had all these powers and had no problems he had secured them----how does it feel to have a "Socialist" president with those powers----ya shakin' in your boots yet???? (I don't mean people here--but in a rhetorical sense to all those like the neo-cons, the sycophants for Bush and his administration and those media right wing talking heads who argued so vigorously that Bush needed them)
"What is good for the goose is good for the gander!" I guess----and "they can hang on their own petards!!"
One other old saying that I think applies here---"watch what you wish for--you might get it---just not in the way you had hoped!"
I did find this rich--- the other day--some Republican backbencher Congressman demanded that David Axelrod---Obama's chief political adviser should resign immediately saying something along these lines "it is a very real danger that our president has this Machiavellian character advising him!"
That is something---Bush had "his brain"--his good buddy-Karl "Turdblossom" Rove who was the ultimate string puller for nearly eight years with him in the White House----
That this bozo says Axelrod should resign------PRICELESS!!!!

Just a few quotes for you allbi-
"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard."
"I believe that all government is evil, and that trying to improve it is largely a waste of time."
"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right. "
-H. L. Mencken

It could also be because of something he was told in the briefings that were held just before he took office, too. That, in itself is even more disturbing.
Anyone remember back when Carter ran for office and said that he would blow the lid on the Government UFO cover ups?
Remember that he didn't do that and became very suddenly silent on the subject after he was elected. I have to wonder what he was told in those early briefings that changed his mind.
Same thing, different subject matter.

Bush was a liberal, Obama is a socialist/communist. You are suckered again! Change is the only thing you will have in you're pockets once he gets his cap and trade! I told this board time and time again, Obama isn't "change" simply the same run-around you get from any politician. To think you believed it is more surprising than any thing Obama's "teleprompter" tells him to say.

What the hell did you all expect??!! Anybody that grew up and has lived in or near Chicago understands that they do it a lot different there. What all you silly "change seekers" got is exactly what Obama is. A charismatic slick talking rookie politician that won a Senate seat thanks to the total ineptness of the opposition. He learned what little he knows from all the corrupt hacks like Tony Rezko who run Chicago and the rest of the most corrupt state in the entire country, Illinois. And don't think for a minute that the Republicans are any better. There is a two party system there, alright. The corrupt, sleazy incumbents and those that want to be. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Well, now we got it.

I am neither surprised or disappointed. In a democracy, no one gets everything they want. I wish Obama would do somethings differently. But it would be naive to expect him to do everything the way I would want. He has to try to be everyone's president, not just mine.
The only president that would do everything the way I want is me

If you don't like something he is doing. Speak up. Don't shut up. Articulate an actual position on an issue and propose an alternative approach or policy. Don't just complain in general.

Obama the communist. Cool. And the alternative was? McCain? Republican insaniacs? Laughable.
I don't think Obama is a socialist or a communist. Go read wikipedia. There is wide disagreement on what socialism is. Therefore, I don't see how you can attach a label to someone when that label does not even have a good definition itself.
Do you really think that there is no benefit in having some things that are purely for the common good of the citizens?
How about this ... let's privatize the fire department. We will make it so that anyone can start their own fire management company. Next time they have to respond to a call at your house, we will get them to send you a bill. I cannot wait to make a profit from other people's misfortunes.

I still like Obama and think overall--he is doing a good job--as to why anyone would want that job now--I don't know--I am just saying--I am a bit disappointed he didn't hold to a promise he had made during the campaign--but then again--that is par for the course---he may not be perfect--but to me--he sure as is a far sight better than what I think we would have had, had McCain won---Sarah woulda taken him out and we'd have her as Prez--that is a damn scary thought----I'd rather have kept Bush than to have her a heartbeat away from the presidency!!

Obama, your new President......a Socialist?Communist????? That is like saying that Tony Blair and New Labout (the present, democratically elected, British Government, are Socialist!!! The party used to be a party of the people......for the people....but now is a middle class enclave....more right wing than anything).
I do wonder what some Americans actually believe Socialism and Communism to be? It seems if it's not fairly right wing, a political view must be Socialism or Communism!!
Socialism is not Communism! Every person, that I know, who would say they are a socialist, believes in democracy, capitalism, the need for people to be responsible for themselves...but that a Government should be run for the benefit of all, and not just those who can afford to pay for everything they need. Isn't that why we ALL pay taxes...to benefit the whole country. Isn't that why we have an education system available to all, wealthy or not and the same with a health system? If not, it should be!!
Socialism does not say that there should not be privately run schools or hospitals, for it is the right of every person, to be able to choose. What Socialism does say, is that those who cannot afford to educate their children in private schools, or use private medical facilities (the majority of the population), should be ble to have education and health facilities which are equal, if not better than privately run institutions.
This care should extend to all sorts of other areas within society and no one should be thinking, ''Well I am not paying for his or her welfare.'' No one should have this attitude, for anyone can fall upon hard times, or not be in a financial position to be able to afford to pay up front for things that they need....every time .......and nothing is entirely free. Taxes, either those paid to the Governt or local authorities and National Insurance (something we pay in the Uk), go towards all the things, that many believe to be free!!!
I have had so many Americans, on various sites call this or that, Socialist or Communist, when they really do not understand what the words mean. I have had Americans tell me that every single political party in the UK is Socialist or Communist. That is plain ignorance.
Let's face it....with your Constitution....a Socialist/Communist President would not be allowed to remain in office! The people would have a right to bear arms and revolt against what it feared to be a totalitarian regime. In reality, I can't see that happening, it's not 1776 anymore....but 2009.....I don't reckon an American Government would allow uprisings....what with having an army, navy and airforce and all the other security forces...and a President being the Commander in Chief!
Obama....a Socialist/Communist........Gordon Brown..a Socialist/ Communist....the list of leaders and Prime Ministers could go on and on. I am always reminded of the murder in 1973 of President Allende of Chile, the first democratically elected Marxist president, ever! Some big country in the Northern Hemisphere, sort of helped the military coup, and Allende was murdered and the country thrown into years of terror, and it all stated on that now very famous date.....September 11th.....but in 1973.
People were taken away by secret police and never seen again....thousands......not comunists....not socialists...just people who believed in democracy......and not fascism! One wonders what Chile would have been like today, if Allende had been given the chance to be the President the people wanted and not wanted rid of, by not only the right wing forces of his own country, but the Communist/Marxist/Socialism, shit scared Government of another country...or maybe, even two!!!
''Cap an Trade''
My father had a trade. he was a skilled man and when I was a small child, he wore a cap, to keep his balding head warm in the winter.
There is nothing wrong with wearing a cap. There is nothing wrong with having a trade. My father worked hard and raised three children.
''Cap and trade''... is an insult to the workers of any nation!!
And Yes, I am a Socialist!! A Socialist, who votes for a Conservative Member of Parliament, because he is a damned good representative for his constituency and I am a Socialist, who would use Private Medical Facilities, if I had the money and would have educated my children in Privatee Schools....had I been wealthy enough. It's called choice. It's called freedom. It's called allowing people to live the lives they want, but at the same time, providing facilities which are almost free at point of usage.....and paid for....partly....by the taxes we pay.

Very good point, let's even cut to the chase and have a mega-corporation own EVERYTHING and run the government...imagine the money it would save them in political contributions and lobbyist activities! And then let's call every other system socialist or communist...
And then let's also privatize the army and make it the mega-corporation's army! And don't anyone dare call this fascism, that's just the American way, damn it, we gotta make a buck and make war profitable!!
Wouldn't that make the conservatives happy? After all, the business of America is business, meaning the politics of America are all about profit, and if the conservatives could get their way, at ANY cost and with ZERO regulations.
The wild west all over again, or the law of the jungle, whichever image you prefer...
The conservative idea of the free market is however totally hypocritical, given the huge subsidies to industrial farms or tax breaks to the oil industry, for example, which they support, as well as letting the taxpayer, rather than industry, pay to clean up industrial environmental messes.
The conservative ideology is a government of, by and for Big Business, and let the people eat crumbs and drink trickles, and keep them in their lowly place, and anyone who dares questioning this has to be anti-American.

Not "change we can believe in" but "more of the same we get screwed with"
http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2009/04/obama-doj-worse-than-bush
Once you give more power to the government, and gives yours away, you cannot take it back, short of a revolution. That's why Democracy requires vigilance, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It's is not a spectator's sport, and requires a lot more than voting once in a while.
While the lobbyists are busy pushing their agendas really hard, we are snoozing, watching "reality shows". Like the Romans, we are watching the circus while getting screwed.
Obviously government counts on us falling asleep at the wheels, or getting distracted by issues such as abortion or immigration while they pass, for example and as the Bush administration did, a law, at 3am and without serious Congressional or Senatorial debate, making martial law permanent (check it out if you don't believe me)...Look how fast they rammed the Unpatriot Act down our throats...Do you seriously think they will back off now and restore Constitutional government?
The exaggerated terrorist threat (or was 9/11 simply allowed to happened?...isn't it worth a serious investigation?) set the stage for a huge power grab by government with the blessing of all the conservatives in America but a few, those who actually read the Constitution and understood it.
There is nothing like a multi-front, permanent war with an invisible enemy to finally give government (here and everywhere else in the world) the excuses it needs to take your freedoms and rights away, permanently.
By the time you wake up, it's too late. Good morning fascism.
Anyone who would have warned you of such things, which were quite obvious, after 9/11 would have been lynched on the spot.
Remember, you are with us or with the terrorists? How easy it is to manipulate the masses!!!!!!!
