Let me spill out the variables:

Running Debian 5 Lenny
Using Firefox 3.0.11

Have attempted to load the Java packages with the distribution discs, and off the Debian and Java sites. Obviously to no real avail.

Is it possible some techno-geek here aside from elian might be able to explain in Simple English, what is needed to get Java working?

I would like to access the chat rooms. Besides, that Java is nice to have for other various applications. I ask for help from others besides elian because he spends far too much in a computer for work. Love my guy, don't want him having to go sort stuff out for me all the time. :) I know he doesn't mind, I do though. He needs to relax too.

Ah, yes forgot to mention I run a firewall and access the internet via an ethernet connection from a Vista computer. Not sure if any of that would effect the Java or not. And yeah, the Vista box has a firewall and anti-virus to boot as well. We have a safe nice, small home network. Thank you, my star. :)

And thank anyone in advance if they offer help.

Try uninstalling any versions of java you have on your puter , because they never auto uninstall with the new version upgrade.. Then go to the Java website and install the current version and see if that helps.

If you're on about the Chat thingy, I'm experiencing issues. but I close the browser, restart and it works.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, and as far as I remember (not 100% sure) I had to install icedtea to use chat. I have also installed java-common and sun-java6.

Ben, I could NOT access chat using the latest update.

I uninstalled the new Java version and reverted to 1.6.0.7 and it works MUCH better.

get it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_java_runtime/

File Hippo is a great safe download site and I really like their option of d/l older versions. My current older versions are MSN msgr 7.5, Yahoo 8.1.0.421, Zone Alarm 7.0.320.0 and they all run just fine with my OS. IMO the Windows Firewall sux... can't tweak it like you can ZA.

I'm running XP SP3 Firefox 3.0.11

let me know how you fare

Do a search for "JAVA" and look for the "plugin" packages - this adds support to the browser to interface with the JAVA that may or may not be already loaded on the PC.

package name: sun-java6-plugin

Hope this helps Honey,

Okay. Will look into the plug-in first as it seems the path of least resistance. Then, seek out iced tea. After, may need to uninstall and reload a different Java. I'll post back.

Past few days have been kind of hectic on the home front. Not really sat down to do much of anything. Seems mom needs to pay off her deceased husband's taxes. Which really adds some rough worry.

She's now retired, only got her widow's benefits as income. House payments have gotten behind. Now, the taxes with a lien direct to the bank. Nothing me or the wife can do at this point. Nothing mom can really do either.

I can only hope and wait for word back from the Rehab dept, about possible help in finding work. I know there isn't a magic wand. But damn it, this has got to give ... sometime.

Updating:

Have looked into the plug-in. Debian lobs a 29 meg file into the path. It's needed to make the plug-in work. Going to check the dist discs later to see if I can save having to download.
