As many of you know, LDD has an elderly flatmate, an Aussie that's been in NZ for a long time. He's 78 and on Wednesday was taken to hospital by ambulance. He'd been ill with a virus but it seems as though his gall bladder was the problem, that combined with other health issues means surgery as soon as they can get him stabilized.
Any good thoughts and prayers of whatever religion you favor would be appreciated as the doctors and nurses work to get him back to as close to full health as possible.

My dad had his gallbladder removed a few years ago. It sucks. I couldn't imagine him being old and frail and having that surgery. I wish LDDs' roommate the best.

Update: They attempted to do surgery, found the gallbladder full of infection and determined it was too dangerous to remove until he was more stable. They have drained the infection and are working to get him in better shape for the removal.

Yeah Peg that's how I had mine done, but he has so many underlying issues it might be safer to just do the open surgery. Get in and out and bring out from under anesthesia asap.

Well I can tell you as someone who has suffered from Gallstones, there is not pain worse (yes, even worse than childbirth in MY opinion). I do hope he moved forward and is in better health. Thanks to LDD for his kind caring of this fellow.

I can give a update...
doug is currently out of surgery and recuperating in the HD unit ( high dependency )
they have had him on plasma and now on whole blood due to a low blood count and they are watching his blood glucose levels closely as he is a type 2 diabetic
he is on doses of oxynorm and morphine for pain control and have confirmed that the gall bladder is inflamed and infected and full of pus, the first lot of surgery was not a success, they attempted to remove the gall bladder but had to stop and settle for gall bladder drainage and pumping him full of antibotic to fight the fight and stop it spreading to his other organs....
at this stage, they are hoping to beat the infection without removing the gall bladder as they may not be able to do a lapro removal and have to do a full cut removal... and due to the fact he is near 80 years old, and had a triple bypass, it would be a high risk op....
so I am currently sitting here with fingers crossed that everything works out and that he will be home at some stage,.....
many thanks for the well wishing and caring, I have let him know that there are many people around the world that are wishing him the best and he said to say thank you so much

Just talked to LDD, they are taking the flatmate in for surgery tomorrow to remove the gallbladder. He was better today when he saw him and more lucid since they cut down on the pain meds.

Sighs another update. NZ Healthcare is driving me nuts lol
They got the infection under control, but his body is not in shape to handle surgery. They are trying to get him strong enough to go home to rest and then possibly in six to eight weeks go back and take the gall bladder.
If they operated at this stage the odds of his survival are not good, so thanks for your prayers and thoughts from both of us. Please continue to keep thinking about him, and maybe he can keep something down besides to yogurt.

Hopefully the antibiotics do the trick and get the infection in the gall bladder down so they can go ahead and do what needs to be done with the organ itself and get him back healthy again. I do hope he can pull through and have a few more good years.
